About Garrowby Estate

A modern-day Estate

Garrowby is home to the Halifax family, who have been part of the community since 1803. At 13,230 acres, Garrowby Estate is the largest estate in the Halifax Estates group. It lies to the east of York and includes:

  • Forestry
  • Farming
  • Property
  • Garrowby Stud
  • Garrowby Shoot
  • Garrowby Stays
  • Our agricultural, residential and commercial properties are either tenanted or occupied in-hand.

    A diverse geography

The Estate lies 13 miles east of York. At its centre is Garrowby Hall, home of Lord Halifax's son, Lord Irwin. A significant area of Garrowby Estate is designated as a Heritage Area with nationally important landscape value.

    • Western section: the clay soils of the Vale of York
    • Central section: The Wold escarpment rises 250m above sea level, with many deep glacial dales.
    • Eastern section: the chalk soils of the Yorkshire Wolds

    Looking to the future

Garrowby Estate is led by the current Earl of Halifax and his son, Lord Irwin.

The Estate is managed and conserved for the benefit of future generations. Initiatives such as renewable energy, regenerative farming practices and strategic development all inform our future strategy.

It is our goal to maintain the look and feel of a traditional agricultural estate whilst evolving with the times.
